Even though you consciously know that flying is one of the safest ways to travel, you only fly if you absolutely must. Others simply avoid the situation. They do whatever it takes to stay on the ground. They limit their vacation to places that are close to home. They never take the opportunity to see the tourist destinations they dream of. What happens is that not only do you suffer, your family suffers and so can your career. You might find yourself passed over for promotion because of your reluctance to travel. One person continuously put off that necessary plane trip to visit her father. After he died, she felt an overwhelming sense of guilt. Yet another person refused to fly to his mother’s funeral. Instead he spent three days driving each way. The details of the funeral were left to his siblings. Which brings me to something else... Maybe you’re even using this fear as an excuse to avoid something that you don’t want to do. Or maybe you have guilt over doing something and use it as an excuse not to go. Here's one way to cope with your fear of flying: Here's a better way: Understand that this fear will have a root cause. What were the circumstances when this fear first developed? There may have been a bad experience with turbulence. There may have been heavy delays or stress getting to the airport. There may have been a hard landing. If you combine any of these instances with anxiety about other things that may have been happening in your life at the time a fear of flying can develop. Anxiety can include life changes, emotional hurt or feelings of uncertainty. The fear takes root during these heightened emotional states combined with an uncertain experience. People who fear flying actually fear a bad outcome. It’s anxiety about all the things that might possibly happen. You may feel trapped and feel that you have no control of the situation. You realize that “I don't have any control over what's happening." If you were driving in a car, you could open a window or pull over to the side of the road if necessary. Instead of thinking about a positive outcome, your mind dwells on all the negative possibilities. If you've ever stayed awake at night because you were terrified to get on your flight or avoided flying altogether, I recommend these '7 Tips to Fly Stress Free' to help with flying anxiety from Certified Hypnotist and Pilot DJ Frost.
