5 Rules of Autosuggestion
Have you ever seen the power of autosuggestion? There is a children’s book about a train that wants to get to the top of a hill. At first it doesn’t have the strength to make it to the top because it is a small train. The train then begins to chant: “I think I can, I think I can, I think I can.” These suggestions gave the train the mind control to make it successfully to the top. Whether you think you can or you think you can’t...you’re right. The truth is that we already give ourselves suggestions each and every day. It’s a natural part of our thought process. Autosuggestion is when you consciously create the suggestions that will bring you closer to what you want. It all starts with awareness. Stop and think for a moment. Are you aware of how you talk to yourself each day? There is a constant stream of conscious and unconscious thoughts going through your mind. Have you ever: Dropped something and said to yourself “I’m clumsy” Looked in the mirror and said to yourself “I’m fat” Made a mistake and said to yourself “I’m stupid” This kind of self-talk is so common that you are often not even aware of it. It’s become an accepted habit and you do it unconsciously. Start by bringing these thoughts into your conscious mind. How do you do that? It’s simple. Carry a small notepad with you for one week. Each time you notice your self-talk, write it down. Chances are that by the middle of the first day, you’ll have filled up your notepad. You’ll have so many thoughts to write down that you’ll be tired of writing. What were your results? Are most of the thoughts negative? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. I find that when most people do this exercise they talk about what they DON’T want rather than what they DO want.
"We cannot always control our thoughts, but we can control our words, and repetition impresses the subconscious, and we are then master of the situation." ~ Florence Scovel Shinn
Now decide what you want to achieve. What are your dreams and goals? As a hypnotist, I work with my clients to create these kinds of affirmations. I use suggestion to help my clients move past their challenges so that they can reach their dreams. Using the following autosuggestion rules, you will change the way you look at the world. Follow these 5 Rules of Autosuggestion. 1. Use positive rather than negative terms 2. Use the present tense 3. Keep it simple 4. Use exciting, emotional words 5. Keep it in the first person For example, rather than saying “I am losing weight now” instead say “I am slender and attractive”. Instead of saying “I will stop smoking” say “I am a non-smoker” Here are some examples that you might want to use as a model. • I expect success. • I am worthy of love. • I am healthy and strong. • I am committed to achieving my goals and will let nothing stand in my way.
Self Hypnosis Instruction: Add your autosuggestion statements to the end of your induction using one of two
free hypnosis scripts
provided on this site. Option #1 (read the induction). You will simply add the suggestions at the end. Option #2 (record the induction). You will read your affirmations allowing time for each statement to be repeated out loud during your practice. Although many will benefit from this free self hypnosis instruction, others prefer a professionally recorded CD, live workshop or private session with an experienced hypnotist. They find they get better, faster results.
